Betty, a resilient young woman of 25 years, had a difficult start to life. Born into captivity under the control of LRA rebels, she missed out on formal education and faced numerous challenges. One of the significant obstacles she encountered was her lack of knowledge about menstruation, which led her to use old paper instead of quality sanitary pads. Unaware of proper menstrual hygiene practices, she believed this unconventional method was causing health issues for her. As a result of her circumstances, Betty's self-esteem suffered, and she found it difficult to express herself or participate in various activities freely. At the tender age of 14, she unexpectedly became pregnant. However, Betty's life took a transformative turn when she attended a community menstrual health education session organized by VAC-NET Volunteers Action Network. Betty was given a pack of Lucky Girl sanitary pads during the session, which she used for the first time. The experience was nothing short of life-changing for her. "The day I started using pads for my periods, I regained myself and my voice," Betty recalls. Deeply empathetic towards the struggles faced by many girls, she recognized the transformative power of a simple pack of sanitary pads. She realized that by providing this basic necessity, their worlds could change automatically, as hers had. Motivated by her journey, Betty joined the Healthy Period Initiative, a program dedicated to producing pads and educating young girls about menstruation. This initiative allowed her to channel her passion into tangible action, empowering her to make a difference in the lives of others. Betty found profound fulfillment in this work, which she considers to be the most rewarding endeavor she could undertake. Today, through the Healthy Period Initiative, Betty and her team produce sanitary pads and provide menstrual health education to needy girls. Month after month, they support approximately 1,500 girls, ensuring they have access to high-quality pads and the knowledge necessary to manage their menstruation with dignity and confidence. Betty's success story serves as an inspiration to girls everywhere who face similar challenges. Through her resilience and determination, she has transformed her life and become an advocate for menstrual health education and empowerment. Betty firmly believes that every girl deserves the opportunity to embrace her femininity and live a life free from shame and limitations. As Betty continues to make strides in her work, her impact on the lives of countless girls grows. She envisions a world where no girl has to face the obstacles she did, and she works tirelessly to bring that vision to life. Betty's success story is a testament to the transformative power of education, empowerment, and a simple pack of sanitary pads.
